2009 Chrysler Aspen Car Review
The year 2007 witnessed Chrysler's foray into the premium sport utility vehicle segment, when the automaker launched its first truck-based full size SUV, Aspen. Aspen is essentially an upscale version of Dodge Durango. Like Durango, Aspen uses a truck chassis and shares same size, engineering and mechanical components. However, Aspen can be distinguished from Durango in respect of its styling, interior trim and suspension tuning.
On exterior, Aspen borrows quite a bit from Dodge Durango, such as chassis, powertrain and some of the basic body architecture. The 2009 Aspen features Chrysler distinctive front end and rear taillight appearances. The hood surface of Aspen above its automatic headlights and Chrysler winged logo is similar to that of Chrysler Sebring. Chrome is used along the front bumper, bodyside moldings, door handles and on side mirrors. The SUV also features chrome-clad available 18-inch and 20-inch aluminum wheels.
Aspen's cabin has a capacity to accommodate up to eight passengers in its three-row seats, along with maximum gear. With a maximum cargo volume of 102.4 cubic feet, the SUV offers great utility. The interior comes with a number of luxurious amenities and electronic perks in order to please the tech savvy motorists. Chrysler's UConnect Tunes come standard on all Aspens with a 6.5-inch touch screen, a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold music and picture files. The optional UConnect GPS adds a navigation system to UConnect Tunes. For superior rear passenger entertainment, there is an optional Sirius Backseat TV, which has three children's channel.
On the powertrain front, base Aspen comes equipped with an E85 flex fuel capable 4.7-liter V8 engine, good for 303 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. When properly equipped, 4.7-liter-equipped Aspen can tow up to 5,950 pounds. Optional on base Aspen but standard on the J package is the 376 horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard with both the engines. A new addition to the 2009 Aspen line-up is a Hybrid version, which is powered by a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine, paired with two electric motors and a “two-mode” transmission with variable ratios or an electrically continuously variable transmission (ECVT), which maximizes power from the gasoline engine and electric motors.
